How to Control QR Code Size on Zebra Printers with ZPL
Explains how QR code size in ZPL is affected by magnification, encoded content, global scaling and image-based generation, helping engineers choose a stable label printing method.
Background
In automated test, traceability labeling and packaging print applications, engineers often need QR codes to fit a fixed label area. In the ZPL implementation discussed in this article, QR codes cannot always be assigned a final millimeter size like ordinary graphics.
ZPL QR Code Behavior
The ^BQ command mainly controls module size through a magnification factor, while final QR area also depends on encoded content length, error correction and the QR version selected by the implementation.

| Method | Best Fit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Adjust ^BQ magnification | Quickly adjusts overall QR code size. | Control granularity is limited; it does not precisely assign final physical size. |
| Control content length or padding | Useful when QR version selection or stable content structure matters. | It changes encoded content and should be validated with the scanning system. |
| Use ^MU global scaling | When the whole label needs unit or resolution-level scaling. | ^MU affects the whole label, not only the QR code. |
| Generate QR as image | When fixed dimensions, consistent preview or complex layout control is required. | More flexible, but image generation, transfer and caching are more complex. |
Image-Based Workflow
- Generate the QR bitmap at the target size in the host or test software.
- Send it to the printer through ZPL image workflows such as Image Load, Image Save and Image Move.
- Place the image at a fixed label position and validate scanning distance and readability using printed samples.
