Case Study

HVAC Controller with Wi-Fi Box Build Test System

This case is positioned as box build / system-level functional test. The DUT is not a single PCBA, but a finished HVAC controller with Wi-Fi functionality, with focus on communication, IO, network and system-level functional validation.

Project Overview

Automated box build test case for finished HVAC controller, covering Wi-Fi, Ethernet, CAN, RS485, LED analyzer, IO, watchdog timer, RTC and EEPROM data write.

Testing Requirements

  • Verify CAN communication and RS485 communication.
  • Perform LED verification through LED analyzer.
  • Cover Wi-Fi function, Ethernet function, IO functions, watchdog timer, RTC and EEPROM data write.
  • Use NI LabVIEW to organize the finished-product test flow.

Engineering Challenges

  • System-level test needs to be separated from PCBA FCT and focus on functions after assembly.
  • One flow needs to cover Wi-Fi, Ethernet, CAN, RS485, IO, RTC, WDT and EEPROM.
  • The HVAC project material does not include Wi-Fi TX power or frequency test, so Wi-Fi Test Station content is not merged into this case.

Implementation

  • NI LabVIEW manages the box build test flow, communication calls and result judgment.
  • Communication, IO, network and LED analyzer resources validate finished HVAC controller functions.
  • EEPROM write, RTC, WDT and network functions are included in the box build test flow.

Engineering Outcome

  • A box build automated test system was built for finished HVAC controllers.
  • The project clearly separates PCBA FCT from system-level functional validation.
  • The test content is limited to project-supported facts: Wi-Fi, Ethernet, CAN, RS485, LED, IO, RTC, WDT and EEPROM.
